Cardiff marathon logo

Cardiff Half Marathon icon competition

It's your chance to design and be part of the new logo
Your challenge is to design an icon that represents the Cardiff Half Marathon – the biggest road race in Wales and Wales’ flagship running event. Your icon should demonstrate this to both a British and an international audience.

Your icon should meet the following criteria:

Embody Welsh characteristics and identity
Be clear
Be your own original piece of work
Demonstrate modern Wales and a modern event
Be appropriate for a major sporting event
Be flexible enough to work across a broad range of material, including banners, TV, online, race brochures etc.
The most famous example of an icon is the Nike tick or ‘swoosh’ that appears on their clothing and advertising.

The judging panel will be looking for icons that fulfil the above criteria and will appeal to both professional elite runners and those attempting a race for the first time. The panel consists of members of the Cardiff Half Marathon and Barnardo’s brand teams.

The winning design will be integrated into the logo and the designer profiled on the website for one calendar year.

Your icon should be preferably submitted as a PDF, no bigger than 2MB in size. We will also accept EPS and JPEG formats, as well as hard copy drawings. Once selected, the winner will need to send us the Adobe Illustrator file or original hard copy artwork.

Email your designs, along with your name, email address, postal address and age, to cardifficon@barnardos.org.uk or send them to:

Cardiff Half Marathon Icon competition

All competition entries need to be submitted by midnight Sunday 7 February. Any entries received after this time will not be referred to the judging panel.

The font used for the name of the event is Clarendon and your icon will need to work alongside this. The final logo will be in both English and Welsh.

Shapes relating to each of the chat up lines

As the apple logo can easily be manipulated with a heart this got me thinking what i could use for the other chat up lines.

Valentines card development

The fancy text i was using just wasn't work it was not communicating the correct message more so confusing it.
So i decided to look at fonts that were simpler and related to the chat up lines in some way. I started with 'If apple made girlfriends' I did this because i could relate a certain font to the message, and as all graphic designers tend to love apple it works well for the audience as well.

The apple font with a decorative text. I added the girlfriend text in a more decorative font as it still needs to relate to valentines day which is usually very feminine and decorative.

The whole of the text in the decorative font doesn't work as well as its not relating to its message.

so i tried the apple font mixed with the decorative one and this was... well as you can see a, disaster.

Apple font open with no colour doesn't work as well as filled in.

The first existing text experiment worked the best so i tried applying it to a heart to make it more valentines day related, this didn't work either.

so i tried using the decorative font to expand and make a heart shape but it just looked messy and over powered the apple font.

Text in black and red to see how it would work.

The decorative font didn't fit correctly with the apple font so i decided to simplify it down and still keep it light and feminine but making it more of a statement.

Ideas

More sketch ideas for hand drawn type for the front of the valentines card

I have tried adding highlights/shadows to the text to make it less flat looking

although it looks to much like graffiti now i need to experiment with a different font.

so i tried this style of text although i now think its too confusing to read which confuses the message.

occasions brief - Valentines day cards

Text appropriate as it is computer/graphics related

This text will be to simple and boring as valentines day is usually more decorative and pretty looking...
I shall try a more decorative font such as ball park

I traced the font and made it fit to a heart shape

I then played around with colours and gradients to make it look less flat.

Chat up lines...

I originally had the idea from this site made in england design

I wish I had an Eyedropper to capture the color of your eyes.
Has anybody ever told you that your teeth have perfect kerning?
If you were a logo, it would be for a really premium brand.
I’m just like a global nav; I love to be on top.
Come back to my place and I’ll show you a really naughty way to fill up some negative space.
Would you like to lorem ipsum dolor sit on my lap?
If I went to a stock photography site and typed in the keyword: “sexy”, I bet there’d be a picture of you.
I couldn’t help but notice your eye path went right to my smudge stick.
First I think I’ll stroke your curve, then I’d like to fill you.
Is that Content Aware Scaling or are you just happy to see me?
You look perfectly put together. Do you display this well in IE?
I like my fonts sans-serif, and you sans-pants.
You know the hotkey to my Magic Wand Tool
I dig your look and feel.
If you like what you see now, wait’ll you look below the fold.
Let’s “Skip Intro” and just go find a hotel room right now.
When I serve you breakfast in bed tomorrow, would you like your coffee with cream and sugar, or do you prefer it #000000?
Do you want to touch my Bézier curves?
What if I told you the fly on my troussers opens quicker than a 500k JPEG file?
Mind if I take you for a usability test?

Focus for Valentines day Brief

I am going to focus on making the valentines day cards for Graphic Designers/Computer Geeks.

I have had other ideas such as

Idioms: valentines related cards
Playing card shapes to make humourus valentines images
Illustrations of sweets/chocolate/cakes with cute/cheesy words. i.e sweetheart
Decorate cut out typography with love related words
Photography of sweets/candy
Cute character cards
Stitched material crafted cards.

But all these ideas were boring and rather generic so i thought of using cheesy graphic design related chat up lines.. i have researched a few and then came up with my own and answers from a questionnaire by others.

'Your definately a 10pt'

'Apple don't make girlfriends, so i'll make do with you'

You are the CSS to my HTML'

'We just click... like a cursor.'

'Your eyes are almost as sexy as the flick on an uppercase 'R' in Helvetica.'

'Is that a bone folder in your pocket, or are you just happy to see me?'

'I love you... almost as much as Design'

'My names Vista, can i crash and your place tonight?'

'I'd switch to windows, any day for you'

'Your homepage or mine?'

'Can we take this serious and disable network sharing?'

'Can i ctrl + s this moment forever?'

'Adobe should of called it InDesire'

'My Haus or your Haus?'

Rationale/statement of intent and fmp briefs

Final year of my 3 year course besides finding it really hard to decide what i want to do when i leave i had to decide what was going to be my last briefs on the course...

As a Graphic Designer the concept of branding and designing brand identities has always interested me. Brand identity is what I want to specialise in I most prefer designing for retail and clothing labels although I am struggling to just solely stick to this area. My over arching theme for this module is to concentrate on identification, I like promotional work and making my audience aware of an existing brands products or a new brand on the market.
My dissertation influences my design practice, I have researched large brands/branding companies to see how they started out, who designed the logo, how they have changed and what has influenced them with brands such as coca cola, and Kodak. I have interviewed designers to gain a better understanding of corporate image and brand identity. Understanding logo design and how successful brands started out has given me a great insight into how I can have input in designing new brands.
This is what I plan to achieve to get where I want to be in the design industry these are mainly skills which I am hoping I can achieve in the next module, and brush up on in my own time.
I need: Web skills, Lighting photography skills, Basic knowledge of Flash, More work placements, To promote myself. I want To be able to work at a faster pace. To concentrate on type as image and brand identity. In order to pursue my career I need to gain more experience working in the industry and shall continue to find work placements I will concentrate on the previous companies and other brand identity concerned companies.
