To evaluate where i am up to at this stage, (in short) is not up to where i initially planned to begin with....
The briefs i set out to complete before may were
Occasions brief - valentines day cards for graphic designers
Cardiff half marathon logo
Fac records studio logo
Ted baker shop window design
H-samuals poster campaing
Cafe rebrand
Wedding invitations
I have started 4 of these briefs and decided to leave out the last three. I planned to fit these all in amongst my timetable effectively but due to the expansion of most of the briefs caused me to overun on the following ones. I have completed all 4 of the first briefs and am now at the stage of photographing the final pieces in context and getting them onto boards for the assessment.
The occasions brief took especially longer because of the technique that i decided to use to make them (cut out) and then i also had several changes to make from crits and to add a brand to the cards and wrapping paper. I have learnt from this brief that hand made techniques look fascinating but not always the best way when under a time limit. I will definately use the laser cutter to produce more cards.
The cardiff half marathon logo was only suppose to last a few days but was looking for ways to expand the brief to further the logo designs context, i started with changing the layout of the webpage but webdesign is not a particular area i am interested in so i decided to print the logo on to items of clothing. This brief helped me to consider my main focus for my design context and the areas of working that i wish to pursue more of.
Fac records was a difficult brief to put a time scale to, as i was working for a client that only had certain time free to look at the work and discuss with me what it was that he exactly wanted. Due to the printing idea i chose for the business cards this brief is still not complete as i am waiting to recieve a delivery of printed guitar picks which are now 2 weeks late. This has taught me a lesson to never trust certain print companies and choosing another way to print on the pics myself would probably of been a better idea. But i have gained communication skills and working with a client has taught me alot.
Tedbaker is in the process of being photographed at the moment, this brief is a joint one with jane and we have made a model to photograph our designs in context, which gives the brief more of a finished outcome than just photoshopped design sheets.
Working in a partnership has helped this style of brief as it is a large amount of work to do, with many different areas of skills required i feel that myn fit best in the area of hand drawn type, logos and illustration which fit well with janes layout, concept and visual/practical knowledge.
This was my existing timetable, i had planned to work on individual briefs, finish it and then move on to the next, but as it was suggested to work on more the one at once i did and found it much easier to get more work done. But this caused my timetable to mess up and i am still working on the first 4 with no ideas or intentions for the last 3.
Valentines day brief - 2 weeks 18th - 1st Feb
Cardiff marathon icon - week and a half 27th Jan - 7th Feb
Recording studio logo - 12th feb - 26th feb
Ted Baker - 1st march - 26th march 4 weeks
H-Samuel brief - 29th march - 23rd april - 4 weeks
cafe rebrand - 26th april - 14th may
Wedding Invites - 17th may - 31st may
These briefs have helped me to realise where my strengths and weaknesses lie and what areas i wish to push further. The last 7 weeks are going to be stressful but hopefully fun and very worthwhile. I will pick a main focus and produce small briefs for that focus possibly that fit together to make a whole final piece at the end. My main concern is still type as image focusing on promotion and identity. My design context is helping me to focus on the kind of work i need to explore myself for the last 7 weeks.
